With permission from Shen Yun Office, in the afternoon of Jan 27th, the VN-US Traditional Culture Company organized a tea reception to introduce Shen Yun Performing Arts at Sofitel Legend Metropole hotel in Hanoi. With a yearning heart for bridging cultural values, the event introduced the mission to revive traditional culture of Shen Yun Performing Arts, its 12-year developments and achievements, as well as audience’s genuine experiences while seeing the show.
This is the 12th consecutive year Shen Yun Performing Arts toured grant theatres in nearly 150 cities of Europe, America, Australia and Asia. Founded by Chinese American artists and based in New York, with its mission to revive the 5,000-year Chinese civilization through the borderless language of music and dance, Shen Yun has helped millions of audiences worldwide experience and explore the ancient Eastern culture, together with ethical values and the diversity of one of mankind’s most established civilizations.
Attending this event held by VN-US Traditional Culture Company, many guests were surprised and expressed their admiration as they learned about Shen Yun’s determination to revive traditional culture, its fascinating ancient dance techniques – seamlessly combined with modern technology, such as the 3D dynamic digital background, and especially the symphony orchestra bringing together the distinct instruments from both East and West at a scale no other orchestra has ever achieved.
“Culture is the spiritual foundation, while art is the foundation of culture,” said Mr. Ha Van Tang, former Director of Department of Culture – Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism. After this event, Mr. Tang has gained more insights of deeper layers of art and traditional Chinese culture that he never heard of before.
Mr. Pham Viet Long – former Chief of Staff at Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism – expressed his affection for the Shen Yun introducing session, because in his opinion, “there is no modern without tradition, only by preserving and promoting tradition can we have a good modern.” Through the event, he has seen how Shen Yun preserved traditional values. He said Shen Yun is “very worth watching for its special values.”
Another guest is Mr. Hoang Van Dat – musician, People’s Artist, Vice Director of Cai Luong Theater of Vietnam. He was also very impressed by Shen Yun’s dance techniques. “Those dancers jump and flip very high, but land on the ground in such a gentle manner,” he stressed, while showing his admiration for the dancers and hoped he would soon have a chance to watch this top-notch art show.
Sharing her emotion after over 2 hours of the event, Ms. Dang Thu Huong, Director of Music Magazine –Vietnam Television VTV, said she was “very curious when seeing costumes so beautiful, dancers so confident, the orchestra so majestic, while the stage and lighting very professional, I really want to go see the show.” She used the word “righteous heart” to describe her impression, which means the artists put all their heart, mind and life into their performance.
Sharing about classical music, Ms. Nguyen Ngoc Quynh, working at United Nations Population Fund in Vietnam, said: “Right now there are many types of bad music, they could even cause listeners to fall into depression. So top-notch and compassionate traditional music will have a great impact on everyone’s spirit and life.” She also affirmed that Shen Yun is a purely humane performance and it’s a precious chance to watch this show.
In addition to introducing Shen Yun Performing Arts, the event also featured a talk show with singer Pham Thi Hue. Ms. Hue shared about Ca Tru – a Vietnamese traditional art facing threat of being lost and also recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage and Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent protection. She expressed her hope to preserve precious traditional values for future generations.
Another special guest was painter Vu Huy, who has worked as an art director for a few decades in the movie industry. He has seen Shen Yun Performing Arts twice, and enjoyed Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra once. He recalled his emotions: “Today society’s development makes people become indifferent and forget about interpersonal emotions. Shen Yun is like a symbol of genuine art, a benchmark and ruler for genuine art, which helped people to preserve core cultural values as something we can touch.” He expressed his impression on the colors of Shen Yun, the gorgeous costumes of various dynasties, the delighted stage background based on natural tones, as if they were extracted from the essence of Chinese traditional culture.
Another interesting part of the event is “lucky lottery”. The winners were singer Khanh Linh and artist Nhat Ly who would enjoy a 5-day, 4-night tour in Japan and Australia to watch Shen Yun Performing Arts. Ms. Linh said she felt very happy with this surprise gift. This is her first time hearing about Shen Yun and she was very excited to experience the show firsthand.
As the event closed, many guests came home with an emotional mood. They saw the cultural values in Shen Yun, and better understood its mission to revive the 5000-year civilization of mankind. Just like many who expressed their wish to see the show firsthand, Mr. Ha Van Tang, former Director of Department of Culture, exclaimed “wonderful!” after being introduced about this performance art.
